How to configure a Windows Server as a Web Server

In this article, we have given the detail steps to configure a Computer running Windows Server 2003 as a web browser. IIS is known as Microsoft Internet Information Services is known as the web service and is integrated with the Windows Server 2003.
You can use the following steps to install IIS, add optional component or to remove optional components.


1. Go to Start menu, choose Control Panel then click Add or Remove Programs.
2. Now, choose Add/Remove Windows Components.
3. Then click Application Server from the Windows Components and don’t uncheck the select box.
4. After that, click Details and then choose the Internet Information Services (IIS) check box.
5. Now, you have to choose the Details to view the list of IIS optional components.
6. If you have chosen the IIS, then you can choose the optional components you want to install. By default, following components are selected are selected.
o Common Files
o Internet Information Services Manager
o World Wide Web Service
7. Thereafter, you have to chose the World Wide Web Service and remember not to clear the Check box and then click on Details to view the list of IIS optional subcomponents like Remote Administraton (HTML) Tool. Following component will be enabled by default.
o World Wide Web Service

8. Then click on Finish in order to complete the Windows Components Wizard.
9. Then close the Add/Remove Programs dialog box.
Methods to configure Anonymous Authentication
1. Go to Start menu, choose Administrative Tools and then choose Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
2. After selecting IIS Manager, under Computer Name (local computer) right click Websites then choose Properties. Here ComputerName is the name of the Server.
3. After that, in the WebSite Properties dialog box, choose the Directory Security tab.
4. Then choose Edit under Authentication and access control.
5. Choose Enable anonymous access check box if it is unchecked.
6. Click OK twice at the next windows.

Basic Web Site Configuration
1. Go to Start menu, choose Administrative Tools and then choose Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
2. Now, you have to expand Websites under the ComputerName (Local computer).
3. Then right click Default web site and then click Properties.
4. If you have multiple IP addresses assigned to your Computer, choose the IP address that you want to assign to this Website in the IP Address list of the Website tab.
5. Thereafter, click the Performance tab, and use the options to set the web site properties that affect memory, bandwidth use and the number of connections to the website.
6. Moreover, you can control the traffic at the site by configuring the network bandwidth on a particular site. For an example, if you restrict the bandwidth on a lower priority web site, it is to restrict the bandwidth to allow increased access to other sites.

• Now, choose Limit the network bandwidth available to this web site check box in order to configure IIS to throttle network bandwidth to the amount selected in the Maximum bandwidth.
• Thereafter, choose Unlimited to permit unlimited client connections to this website under tab. At the same time, you can also choose Connections limited to and enter number of connections you want to limit this website to.

7. Click the Home Directory tab.
o You can click on the A directory located on this computer, if you want to use the webcontent that is stored on the local computer. Then you must type the path that you want in the Local path box. “C:\Inetpub\wwwroot” is an example for you.

o At the same time, you can use the Web content that is stored on a different Computer by clicking “A click A share located on another computer, and then type the location that you want in the Network directory box that appears.
o Moreover, you can use the Web content stored on another web address by clicking on A redirection to a URL, and then type the location that you want in the Redirect to box.
o Then under The client will be sent to, click to select the appropriate check box.

8. Now, choose the Document tab, and ensure if the list of documents that IIS can use as the default start document. At the same time, if you want to use index.html as your start document you should add it. Refer to the following steps for your convenience.
a. First click Add.
b. Then in the Default content page box, type Index.html, and then click OK.
c. Once you finish the entire above, click the Move Up button until Index.html is displayed at the top of the list.
9. Thereafter, click OK to close the Default Web Site Properties dialog box.
10. Right-click Default Web Site and choose Stop.
11. Right-click Default Web Site and choose Start.
That’s it. The server is now configured to accept the incoming Web requests to the default website. Moreover, you can replace the content of the default Website with the Web content that you want and if you want to create a new website, you can do it.
