How To Connect And Disconnect A Network Drive In Windows?

As you know, there are four methods to connect and disconnect a network drive in the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System. Therefore, it is possible to map a drive letter to any shared resource on a network. If you do so, you can quickly and easily access the resource by using either the Windows XP user interface or a command prompt.
In My Computer there will be an icon for each mapped drive and a list that appears in the left pane of the Windows Explorer of the Operating System.


Follow the steps to connect a drive from My Network Places
• Go to Start menu and choose My Network Places.
• Now, click Entire Network in the left pane and double click Microsoft Windows Network.
• Now, you can double click on the domain that you want to open.
• Then double click the Computer that has the shared resource you want to map.
• Now, all of the shared resources of the Computer will be automatically appear in the Window.

• After that, right click on the shared drive or folder that you want to map and then choose Map Network Drive.
• Now, click on the drive letter that you want to map and then specify if you want to reconnect every time that you log on to your Computer.
• Remember, the Network drives are usually mapped with the letter Z and it is the first default letter for the map drive you create. If you want to change the drive letter, you can select it.
• Now, click Finish. You can view a window that displays the content of the resource you mapped.

Follow the steps to connect a drive from My Computer or Windows Explorer.
• Click on Start menu, right click on My Computer and then choose Explore. This is to connect a drive from My Computer.
• If you want to connect a drive from Windows Explorer, right click on Start and then choose Explore.
• Then on the Tools menu, choose Map Network Drive.
• Then in the Drive box, click a drive letter.
• After that, in the folder box, type the UNC path for the server and shared resource in the following format “\\server name\share name”. At the same time, you can also click on Browser to find the computer and shared resource.

If you are given appropriate permissions, you can also access subfolders in the shared folders. However, you can’t map a drive for a subfolder that is not explicitly configured as a shared resource.

Follow the steps to use the Net Use command to map or disconnect a drive
For batch files and scripts, you can use the net use command. To use the net use command to map or disconnect a drive:

• Click on Start menu and choose Run.
• In the Run box, type cmd. This will open a command prompt window.
• Now, type net use x: \\computer name\share name, where x: is the drive letter you want to assign to the shared resource.

Follow the steps to disconnect a mapped drive:
• Click on Start menu and choose Run.
• In the Run box, type cmd. This will open a command prompt window.
• Then type net use x: /delete, where x: is the drive letter of the shared resource.

• Go to the My Computer.
• Then right click on the icon for the mapped drive.
• Now, click Disconnect.
• If you will disconnect from a mapped drive, you can still access the resource from My Network Places.
