How to restore the personal files from the previous operating system after upgrading to the latest operating system

If you want to recover the personal files from the previous Windows installation to Windows Vista or to Windows 7, following steps will be more useful for you. Sometimes, you’ll be unable to upgrade from an earlier version to latest version of Windows. In such cases, you can perform a custom installation. If you perform a custom installation of Windows Vista or Windows 7, Windows will create a Windows.old folder that contains the files from your previous system. Therefore, you can recover the personal files from the windows.old folder and move them to the custom installation of windows.


Method 1: How to restore recorded television shows
Usually, Windows Media saves the recorded television shows in the Recorded TV Folder. Simply follow the steps.
1.    Find the Windows.old folder, and then open “Users\Public\Recorded TV”.
2.    Now, right click on the Recorded TV and then click on Cut.
3.    After that, click on Start and then choose the User Name in the upper-right side of the Start Menu.
4.    After that, right click the Videos or My Videos folder.
5.    Now, click Paste.
Now, Windows will move the recorded television show files to the Videos folder.
Method 2: How to restore your personal files
To move your Personal files folders from the previous installation to Windows Vista, follow these steps:
1.    Find the Windows.old folder, and then open “Users\UserName”.
2.    Now, press Ctrl+A to select all the items in the Folder.
3.    Then press Ctrl+X in order to move the items in the users folder to the clipboard in Windows Vista.
4.    Thereafter, click on Start and choose the User name in the upper-right side of the Start Menu.
5.    Now, click Paste.

Now, Windows will move the personal files folders to the Windows Vista user account.

Moreover, you can move your Personal files folders from the previous installation to Windows 7. Follow these steps:
1.    Find the Windows.old folder, and then open “Users\UserName”.
2.    Right-Click the Documents folder, and then click Rename. Rename the folder to My Documents.
3.    Then, right click the Music folder and then click Rename to rename the folder to My Music.
4.    After that, right click the Pictures folder and then choose Rename to rename the folder to My Pictures.
5.    Now, you can press and hold the Ctrl and click to select all the folders from the user folder.
6.    Then cut the files by pressing Ctrl+X in order to move the files to clipboardi n Windows 7.
7.    Now, click on Start and then choose the User Name in the upper-right side of the Start menu.
8.    Then click on Paste.
Now, Windows will move the personal files and folder to the Windows 7 user account. These steps will be useful for those who are looking for moving and renaming the files and folders from an older version to a latest version Operating System.
