How to edit the registry settings of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows7 to remove the Favorites and the Libraries from the Windows Explorerwindow

If you have Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7, you can feel the annoyance of the default view of their Windows Explorer. If you open the Windows Explorer window by double clicking on it or by pressing the Windows and the R Keys together, you can view the below shown image.

It is the default view of the Windows Explorer window and the Favorite and the Libraries folders occupy so much of place. Although it is the default view, most of us don’t like this view. If you’re one of them, this article will be very useful for you. Therefore, let’s try removing the Favorites and the Libraries from the default Explorer view.

As you know, there are no Group Policy settings in either Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 to disable or turn OFF favorites and Libraries feature in Explorer. In this case, it is required to modify the registry key to hide them. The main thing you’ve to note about this is, the steps will not completely disable the Folders, but removes from the Explorer window.
Follow the following steps to remove them from Explorer.
Important warning

If you modify the registry incorrectly, some serious problems might occur and

these issues might require reinstalling the Operating System. Therefore,

ensure that you follow the steps carefully. At the same time, if you want to

take a backup of the Registry, you can take if before modify it. Then, you can

restore the registry if a problem occurs or whenever you want. If you don’t

and backup the Registry Files safely.

1.    Click on the Start Button and then type “regedit” in the Search Box and then press the Enter Key to open the Registry Editor Window.
2.    Remember, you’ve to enter the Password, if you’re prompted for the Password.
3.    Now, navigate to the following Key

5.    Then, confirm that default value of the “Attributes” is "a0900100" (without the quotes).
6.    If you change it to "a9400100" (without the quotes), the Favorites will be hidden from the navigation pane in Explorer.

If you’re getting the following error message, you have to give your user account permissions on that specific key.
Cannot edit Attributes:  Error writing the value's new contents.

•    You have to select the “ShellFolder” key on the left pane.
•    Then, it is required to click on "Edit" > "Permissions".
•    After that, you have to select the “Administrators” account from the "Permissions for ShellFolder" window.
•    Then, click on the "Full Control" check-box. Click "Ok".

Now, you can make the changes from the step 3.
1.    Now, navigate to the following registry key from the Registry Editor.

2.    Again, you have to check for the “Attributes” value as "b080010d" (without the quotes).
3.    If you change the value to "b090010d" (without the quotes), the Libraries will be hidden from the Explorer.

If you’re getting the following error message, you have to give your user account permissions on that specific key.
Cannot edit Attributes:  Error writing the value's new contents.
1.    Therefore, you have to follow afore said steps to fix this error message.
2.    Now, you can close the Registry Editor.

3.    As you’ve made changes to the Registry, it is required to restart the Computer for the changes to take the effect.
4.    Now, you can view the Explorer and confirm that the issue is resolved.
