Fix: Images are not opening in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Sometimes if you try opening the pictures using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer feature in Windows XP, you might have noticed that the images will not be opened fully. However, if you open the same images in any other applications like MS Paint or photoshop, you will be still able to view them. Moreover, some of the files will not be displayed in Windows Explorer. This issue occurs if the Shimgvw.dll file is no longer registered.

Important warning
If you modify the registry incorrectly, some serious problems might occur and these issues will require reinstalling the operating system. Therefore, ensure that you follow the steps carefully. At the same time, if you want to take a backup of the registry, you can take if before modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs or whenever you want. To resolve this problem, register the Shimgvw.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
1.    Log on to the computer as an administrator.
2.    Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\shimgvw.dll, and then click OK.
3.    When you receive a message that resembles the following, click OK:
DllRegisterServer in C:\Windows\System32\shimgvw.dll succeeded.
4.    Close Windows Explorer, and then try to view the picture again.
5.    That’s it. The issue is resolved now.
