Tips: How to turn ON network discovery in Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Network Discovery is one of the features of homegroup that is used for prevention purpose. If you’ve connected your computer to a network, the network policy settings will prevent you from completing these steps. The network discovery is a network setting that affects whether your computer can find other computers and devices on the network and whether other computers on the network can find your computer. By default, Windows Firewall will block network discovery, however you can enable it.  Follow the below steps to enable network discovery in Windows 7.

1.    Now, open the Advanced sharing settings by clicking on the start button and selecting control panel.
2.    Now, you can type network in the search box to locate Network and Sharing Center.
3.    After that, on the left pane it is required to select Change Advanced Sharing settings.
4.    Then, click on the chevron for expanding the home or work network profile.
5.    Now, you can select the option to turn ON the network discovery and file sharing.
6.    You can select any of the followings.


o    To share your Public folders so that people on other computers on the network can open files in them but can't create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files.
o    To share your Public folders so that people on other computers on the network can open files in them and also create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files.
o    Once you select the option, you can click on Save Changes. It is required to enter the password if you’re prompted.
o    After typing the password, you can confirm the provided information.

Now, let’s discuss about turning ON the network discovery, file sharing, public folder and printer sharing in Windows Vista.

1.    Open Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel.
2.    Under Sharing and Discovery, click the chevron  next to File sharing to expand the section, click Turn on file sharing, and then click Apply.   If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.    As mentioned above, open the Network Sharing Center from the control panel.
4.    Then, under the Sharing and Discovery option, it is required to click the Chevron icon next to the File Sharing to expand the secion.
5.    After that, turn ON the file sharing and click on Apply. Here, it is required to enter the password if prompter.
6.    Now, you can click the chevron button next to the Public folder sharing to expand the secion and then select any of the followings.
o    To share the Public folder so that people on other computers on the network can open files in it but can't create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files, and then click Apply.   If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. This is the default setting.
o    To share the Public folder so that people on other computers on the network can open files in it and also create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files, and then click Apply.   If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
7.    After selecting any of the options, click the chevron next to Printer sharing to expand the section and click turn ON printer sharing.
8.    Now, click on apply and enter the password if you’re prompted.
