Tips: How to use MMC in Windows 7 for preventing standard usersfrombeing able to restart or turn OFF the computer

Consider you’ve a Windows PC and configured with multiple users, how many times you would have thought to prevent other standard users from turning OFF or restarting the computer? Uncountable times? Okay, in this article, we have a great plot for you. Now, let’s discuss about preventing other users from performing discussed tasks. For this task, we’re going to create a separate Group Policy object for non-administrators. In order to open the Group Policy, press the Windows logo key, type mmc in the search box and press the enter key. Now, you can open the Microsoft Management Console.
1.    First, in the File tab, it is required to click Add/Remove Snap-in.
2.    Now, in the left side under the available Snap-in’s, it is required to select Group Policy Object and double click on it.
3.    Now, you can open the Group Policy Wizard.
4.    Click browse under the Local Computer Group Policy Object.
5.    Then, select Non Administrators under the Users tab and then click OK.
6.    Now, it is required to navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar under the newly created Local Computer \ Non-Administrators policy object in the left pane.

7.    Next, select Remove and prevent access to the shutdown, restart, sleep and hibernate commands and double click on it.
8.    After that, it is required to select Enable>Apply>OK.

Make sure that if you enable this policy setting, the Power button, shutdown button, restart, sleep and hibernate options will be removed from the start menu. Moreover, even the power button will be removed from the Windows Security screen that appears when you press Ctrl + Alt + Del keys.

If you wish to prevent only specific users from being able to turn the computer OFF, you can use the gpedit.msc and navigate to the following.

1.    Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > Shut Down the System.

2.    Then, double click on it to select Users.
3.    Then, click Apply and then on OK.
4.    Remember this security setting lets you determine which users should log out or shouldn’t log out or shutdown the computer.
5.    That’s it… All it is done now.
