Cheap electricity with Artificial Leaf which can self heal













An artificial leaf was created by scientists, way back in 2011 and this leaf could mimic the real leaf in producing energy from water and sunlight. It was promoted as a possible inexpensive source to generate electricity, at least for the developing countries and for remote locations. The artificial leaf is a simple silicon wafer covered in a catalyst. This wafer is then dropped in a can of water and kept in sunlight. The artificial leaf then breaks down the water into oxygen and hydrogen gases. The gases, which come up as bubbles are collected and can be used to power electricity in fuel cells.


It was found that the artificial leaf is prone to bacteria build up on it and the process of generating energy is halted because of the bacteria cover up. Scientists have now further refined the process for the artificial leaf with new catalysts developed which will allow the lead to heal itself which means that the leaf can even work in dirty and muddy waters. It is being assumed that about 0,25 gallons of water would be able to produce about 100 watts in a 24 hour cycle.

Researchers from the University of Illinois have developed the micro batteries which can be used to drive compact electronic devices and new applications for radio communications. The micro batteries are so good that they can even out power the super capacitors. The results were published in ‘Nature Communications’ in the April 16 issue. The micro batteries have energy and power and with the researchers tweaking the structure of the micro batteries a little bit, its use can be for wide range applications.

The high performance of the micro battery is based on its 3-dimensional micro-structure. Google Microsoft Bidding War Continues!

As we all know that Google and Microsoft both went for Yahoo recently. The both big leaders in IT sector is keen to acquire more companies. As the competition is bigger the big deal also goes bigger. Now their Bidding eye turns to Digg the social book marking site. Techcrunch reports that Google, our source says, will likely bid $200-$225 million, which Digg would likely accept.

The deal made by Microsoft is lower than that of Google but Microsoft already has 3yrs advertising deal with digg and it also said that the most of the revenue generated from it. This bidding deal story was soon denied by Digg CEO Jay Adelson is calling this post “completely inaccurate”. The interesting thing is that only a few days before Yahoo started the similar Digg site called Yahoo Buzz . Anyway the bidding war between the big giant IT companies is expecting to get more heat….
