Clean Wind Energy being produced, London Array is online

London Array, presumably the largest operating wind farm was completely brought online, with the last of the turbines (the 175th) was commissioned on Saturday afternoon. The wind farm has a total of 175 wind turbines and is 20 km off the coast of Kent. The farm has a capacity of 3.6 megawatts. It is spread in an area of 90 sq km. It is estimated to generate power for about half a million homes and is likely to reduce about 900,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

Though government approval was given in 2006 for the project, the construction of the London Array began in March 2011 for the first of the offshore foundations for the turbines. In January 2012, the first turbine was installed and power was achieved for the first time in October 2012. With the rest of the turbines being installed expeditiously in the first phase, the London Array has been generating power to the grid since Thursday. Another 34 turbines would be installed in the next phase and presently, burying of the balance of cables in underway.
