ISRO charts new path for R & D, industry to make PSLVs andcommunications satellites

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Defence Minister AK Anthony has been consistently stressing on the need for private participation in the defence production and research and development for some time now. India’s ISRO has taken the first step in this direction with its plans to involve the industry to launch of privately built rockets like the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles (PSLV) and the production of communications satellites. K Radhakrishnan, Chairman of ISRO stated that there would be a national committee set up to work out the modalities. He further added that the target is five years from now that the first of the PSLV would roll out from that entity.

The committee would also look at the revenue model and technology transfer and the industry representatives have been already sounded in this regard at a meeting in Ahmedabad in January, he added. It is believed that such a plan would allow the ISRO scientists to concentrate on the research oriented activities and development including focusing on unique science projects, develop remote sensing satellites, rather than undertaking repetitive programs of building launch vehicles and communications satellites.
